Ian Swithenbank Ceramic Artist
Ian Swithenbank ceramics demonstrate a variety of firing techniques and glazes that help illustrate the enjoyment he gets from working with the clay. He allows his thoughts and decision making to influence the way in which a piece develops, often producing something unexpected.
Having spent the majority of my professional life working in finance, the opportunity to change career arrived somewhat unexpectedly. With renewed energy I took the opportunity to further my studies and completed a BA (Hons) degree in Applied Arts achieving a 1st class hons degree in 2010, from Leeds Met University.
My chosen field of ceramics allowed me to explore the materials used in greater detail and begin the journey, which continues today, to understand the many ways it can represent our thoughts and ideas.
Inspired by the natural surroundings and organic surfaces, the ceramic forms created embody the varied surfaces and textures of the local landscape. This combined this with his love of sculpture and the human form have led to some distinctive figurative pieces
I continue with my passion in ceramics and combine this with the creativity of working with the on-trend texture, Jesmonite, an eco-friendly mineral based material.
I design in wax creating ornamental style pillar candles for decorative purposes for the home allowing for a unique and contemporary appearance.
